Hello my FAITH-ful readers! I hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather and flowers! It’s always great when you can ‘paws’ and lick, I mean smell, the sweetness of flowers! Speaking of sweet, I have some really sweet news that you’ll be wagging your tail about! Our family is growing by two feet and four paws! Introducing Lynn & Big B as part of the pack in the maCares Service Dog Support Program! I’m spinning in circles I’m so happy!!!
Big B sniffed and greeted Lynn in June 2017. Big B is a Diabetic Alert Dog and is the primary source of how Lynn detects rapidly changing blood glucose. Lynn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes almost 15 years ago. She experiences drastic blood glucose levels and finds it difficult to stay on top of constantly checking her sugar levels while at the same time raising her daughter, working, and pursuing a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.
Since Big B is with her at home and school, Lynn has noticed a huge difference in her health and life. Big B alerts her throughout each day. With Big B’s help to stay on top of monitoring her levels and reminding her to take her medicine, Lynn’s cognitive function as well as her performance in school has improved. He also helps Lynn to be more grounded and present for her daughter.
Without Big B, Lynn thinks she would likely have continued to feel overwhelmed and be in denial of her imminent health issues, which would have resulted in life threatening diabetic complications in the future.
Lynn looks forward to getting out and practicing acupuncture as well as getting involved in community building and social justice issues. Amidst studies, she participates in her daughter’s nonprofit school and occasional animal fostering. During her clinic internship this summer, she will begin providing low cost acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, eventually providing this service for free through several nonprofit programs in the community.

This article was written by FAITH
My name is FAITH, and I'm a service dog to Sgt Terry White, PH IOF. You've probably seen me around the Market America office or at one of their events. I'm the pretty blonde with the big smile The wonderful maCares team is pretty fond of me, and they've decided to devote each Friday's blog post to my stories, pearls of wisdom, and "tails" of others giving back to their communities. We'll call it "Fridays with Faith". What you may not know about me is that I'm named after someone special. The flag that represents this great country flies high on the flag pole for my namesake's sacrifice. I am named in memory of U.S. Army Sergeant Faith Hinkley, who died on August 7, 2010 in Iskandariya, Iraq. Faith was part of the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Through me, Faith Hinkley's legacy lives on, helping and healing another wounded soldier. maCares loves making a difference in the lives of veterans and animals. Please consider donating or getting involved with maCares so they can continue supporting veterans and dogs like Terry and me, and honoring heroes like Faith Hinkley.
