Fridays with FAITH – Meet Cathy Showfety!
Hello FAITH-ful readers!! This time, I would like to introduce our therapist for the maCares/faithCares teams!
Cathy Showfety, APRN, MSN, CS, is a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (easy for you to BARK). Cathy has a specialty in depressive disorders and anxiety disorders, including PTSD which is right up our faithCares teams’ alley! She has a private practice and also does nursing home consultations when there isn’t a world-wide pandemic going on.
Cathy refers to herself as a “certifiable Navy Brat”! Her dad was a career Naval officer and one of her brothers retired from the Navy in recent years. Cathy always knew she wanted to be nurse since she was a child. There are also doctors in her family who showed her first-hand what it was like to help people. But when her cousin committed suicide, she transferred to work in the psychiatric unit and committed to working in this field of nursing to see if she could help patients and their families avoid what her family had gone through.
How did Cathy get involved with maCares/faithCares? Cathy had a friend who knew Brandi Quinn, our PACK leader, and Cathy asked how she could help the cause. That’s when Cathy began hosting a veteran support group for our faithCares teams as well as counseling for the caregivers. Cathy was eccited to help because of the strong service connection in her family! Our hoo-mans, who have a unique shared experience, can relate to each other in this group setting that benefits everyone involved. The veteran group meets once a month and everyone PAW-ticipates as time and circumstances allow. These life-affirming monthly meetings continued through the pandemic via video chats and are just now returning to in-person meetings for those who are interested. The remainder continue to dial in to the video link.
As we all have felt the effects of the isolation over the past year, Cathy is also looking forward to getting back to “normal” and meeting with everyone in the same room.
I am extremely grateful Cathy cares so much for our hoo-mans – she really helps them and genuinely cares…just as much as we service dogs do!
We look forward to having you join our PACK!
