We Found a Mass… These four words will change your life forever.

DiGeralamo Family web sizeSarah and Charlie DiGerolamo, co-founders of the Kids of Childhood Cancer, faced a battle that could be considered every parent’s worst nightmare. Their son Vinny, who was born with a cleft lip, cleft palate, and Pulmonary Stenosis, was diagnosed with cancer at 4 years old. After 11 months of treatment, Vinny was cancer-free for 9 months, but when he was 6 years old, Vinny began to relapse and did so 4 times over 5 years. Vinny earned his wings on February 18, 2013. During his 5 year battle, Sarah’s dream came true: to help the other families on the Brenner’s Pediatric Oncology Ward battling right beside her. “Kids of Childhood Cancer” was formed in 2009 so no one would go through this alone.

KOCC-2012-Super-Hero-v1The Kids of Childhood Cancer Foundation provides financial support for families of children battling cancer – including household bills, medical bills, food, gas cards, clothes, and toys. They also hold events for the children, such as Ice Cream Parties, Polar Express parties, and LEGO Therapy Night. The foundation sends families in North Carolina on respite vacations to their Safe Haven Beach Condo on Topsail Island, to escape from their harsh reality and provides support for whatever is needed on an individual basis.

ma Cares will support Kids of Childhood Cancer this year so that they can help more families through this difficult time and the need couldn’t be greater – Each school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer. That’s over 12,600 children diagnosed each year. Though the statistics are alarming and heart wrenching, the Kids of Childhood Cancer Foundation is helping some of these families find solace, relief, and assistance to give them the strength and means to support their child through his or her battle with this disease.
