Fridays with FAITH: faith Cares Is Expanding (Again)!!!

Hello my FAITH-ful readers! I hope you are enjoying your summer vacation! The maCares and faith Cares family has some incredibly ‘paw-some’ news that will make you spin in circles with excitement! With the help of its loyal supporters, maCares has expanded the pack to include U.S. Army Veteran Michael Scott & his service dog BO in the faith Cares Service Dog Support Program! Happy dance!!!

BO shared the dirt of his and Mike’s tale. SSGT Michael Scott served in the United States Army for 24 years. During his 2 tours, he was stationed in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) to protect children as a Section Sergeant Security. Mike also participated in the 50th Anniversary of D-Day drop into Normandy.

Mike served as an Airborne Air Assault Jumpmaster and Parachute Rigger. Jumpmasters are the expert paratroopers in an airborne unit who train and teach the military techniques for jumping from airplanes. They are responsible for training soldiers who enter Army Airborne School into paratroopers and managing airborne jump operations in airborne units across all branches of services. A parachute rigger is a person who is trained or licensed to pack, maintain or repair parachutes.

BO and Mike matched in December 2016 and became an official team in May 2017. Mike has bilateral hearing loss, struggles with survivors’ guilt and moral injury, and has mobility limitations. He also feels detached from society. BO is providing Mike with the confidence to go out into the community and be a part of society. BO has helped Mike by reducing his stress levels, anxiety, negative thoughts/attitude, sleeplessness, retrieval of dropped items, and alerting sounds to Mike.

Mike and BO like to give back by making connections with other veterans. Mike enjoys camping, fishing, building models, drawing, and family time with his wife and children.

“The country gave me an opportunity to become someone, so I wanted to give back to my country.”

I hope you have enjoyed getting to know Mike & BO with me! Be sure to check maCares & faith Cares service dog teams by staying connected with us online at maCares.org. My name is FAITH, and I'm a service dog to Sgt Terry White, PH IOF. You've probably seen me around the Market America office or at one of their events. I'm the pretty blonde with the big smile The wonderful maCares team is pretty fond of me, and they've decided to devote each Friday's blog post to my stories, pearls of wisdom, and "tails" of others giving back to their communities. We'll call it "Fridays with Faith". What you may not know about me is that I'm named after someone special. The flag that represents this great country flies high on the flag pole for my namesake's sacrifice. I am named in memory of U.S. Army Sergeant Faith Hinkley, who died on August 7, 2010 in Iskandariya, Iraq. Faith was part of the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Through me, Faith Hinkley's legacy lives on, helping and healing another wounded soldier. maCares loves making a difference in the lives of veterans and animals. Please consider donating or getting involved with maCares so they can continue supporting veterans and dogs like Terry and me, and honoring heroes like Faith Hinkley.
